There are 50 dog groomers on this page for Preston, Lancashire, including 6 that cover it from nearby. 0 are verified by their owners. This list is free to be on and nobody pays to move up. No licence exists for dog grooming in England, so we show what matters instead: qualifications, insurance, whether a groomer works one-to-one, and whether they are taking new clients right now. In Preston that last one matters: when we checked in October 2026, several of the city's busiest groomers had closed their books to new customers.

How to choose a dog groomer in Preston

A full groom usually means bath, dry, brush-out, a clip or scissor to style, nails, ears and a hygiene trim. De-matting and hand stripping are often separate, and priced separately. Each listing shows what the groomer offers, in their own words, and the flags show the specifics: cats, large breeds, puppies, nervous dogs.

Most groomers in Preston are one-person or home-salon businesses. Some work one-to-one with no other dogs in the room and no cages; that suits nervous or elderly dogs and it is why those groomers fill up first. Others run a small salon with two or three dogs in at once, which is fine for a confident dog and usually means shorter waits for an appointment. Ask which, and check the flags on the listing.

There is no council licence for grooming in England. The animal activities that councils license, including Preston City Council, are set out in the 2018 regulations: selling animals as pets, boarding cats and dogs (including day care), hiring out horses, dog breeding and keeping animals for exhibition. Grooming is not on the list, so "licensed" is not a claim to look for from a groomer. Look for qualifications and insurance instead: City & Guilds 7863 Level 2 (grooming assistant) and Level 3 (dog grooming), iPET Network Level 3 and Level 4, or OCN Level 3 are the recognised routes. Insurance to expect is public liability plus care, custody and control cover for the animals in the groomer's care. Anyone with staff must hold employers' liability insurance by law.

Signs of a good groomer: they ask about your dog's health, temperament, coat and last groom before they quote; they are happy to show you where the grooming happens; they tell you if a coat is too matted to save and what that means for the cut; and their cancellation policy is clear before you book. Signs of a bad one: no questions, no visibility, and a price that changes on the day.

Useful to know in Preston

  • Preston's groomers are a mix of shop salons and home salons. The shop salons are on the main roads: Plungington Road, Ribbleton Lane, Tulketh Brow in Ashton, Liverpool Road in Penwortham and Station Road in Bamber Bridge. The home salons are spread through Fulwood, Cottam, Lea, Penwortham, Lostock Hall, Walton-le-Dale, Grimsargh and Goosnargh. A few mobile groomers bring a fitted van to your door across the PR postcodes.
  • Councils license five animal activities under the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018: selling animals as pets, boarding cats or dogs, hiring out horses, dog breeding and keeping or training animals for exhibition. Dog grooming is not one of them. Groomers must still meet the Animal Welfare Act 2006. Source: The 2018 regulations, Schedule 1
  • Recognised grooming qualifications: City & Guilds 7863-02 Level 2 Certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants and 7863-03 Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming; iPET Network Level 3 Certificate and Diploma and Level 4 Higher Professional Diploma; OCN Level 3 Diploma in Commercial Dog Grooming. Source: City & Guilds 7863
  • Insurance for groomers is not a legal requirement for a sole trader, but public liability and care, custody and control cover are the industry standard, and employers' liability insurance is compulsory from the first employee, with a minimum of £5 million of cover. Source: GOV.UK, employers' liability insurance
  • Cat grooming is rarer. A handful of Preston salons groom cats alongside dogs, and one mobile groomer on this page works only with cats, visiting them at home.

Mobile or salon?

A mobile groomer brings a fitted van to your house, with its own water, power and table. Your dog never leaves the street, there is no waiting room and no other dogs, and for an anxious dog or an owner without a car that is often the deciding factor. The trade-off is availability: a van can only be in one place at a time, so mobile groomers run tight rounds and are the first to fill up.

A salon or home salon has the space for a proper bath and a drying cabinet, can handle bigger dogs and bigger coats, and can usually fit you in sooner. Some take one dog at a time; some run a small waiting area. Both are fine. The one thing to ask is whether your dog will be in a crate at any point and for how long, and to decide whether you are comfortable with the answer.

Puppies, nervous dogs and older dogs

A puppy's first groom should be short and gentle, ideally before it is six months old, so that clippers, dryers and a table become ordinary before the adult coat comes in. Several Preston groomers offer a puppy introduction session for exactly this; look for the flag on the listing.

Nervous dogs and older dogs with stiff joints do best with a groomer who works one-to-one and is willing to go slowly, split a groom over two visits, or stop if the dog has had enough. Tell the groomer before you book. A good one will ask anyway.

Coats, matting and what your groomer can and cannot do

Curly and double coats mat quickly if they are not brushed between grooms, and a badly matted coat often cannot be saved: the kind thing is to clip it short and start again, because de-matting a solid coat hurts. A groomer who tells you that is doing their job. Ask what brushing they recommend between visits, and how often to come back for your dog's breed; six to eight weeks is typical for the curly breeds, longer for short coats.

Frequently asked questions

How much does dog grooming cost in Preston?

It depends on size, coat and condition. A full groom for a large or matted dog costs far more than a bath and tidy for a small one. Groomers on this page who publish their prices show a starting price on their card. Ask for a quote with the breed, coat type and the date of the last groom.

How often should a dog be groomed?

It depends on the coat. Many curly and double-coated breeds need a groom every six to eight weeks; short coats less often. A groomer will advise for the breed and the dog, and will tell you what brushing to do between visits.

Do I need a licensed groomer?

No. Dog grooming does not need a council licence in England. Councils, including Preston City Council, license boarding, day care, breeding, pet sales and exhibitions, not grooming. Groomers must still meet the Animal Welfare Act 2006. Look for qualifications and insurance instead.

What qualifications should a dog groomer have?

City & Guilds 7863 Level 2 (grooming assistant) and Level 3 (dog grooming), iPET Network Level 3 and Level 4, or OCN Level 3 are the recognised UK routes. Listings show what each groomer states. "Seen" means we have seen the certificate.

What insurance should a groomer have?

Public liability, and care, custody and control cover for the animals in their care. If they employ anyone, employers' liability insurance is a legal requirement.

What does a full groom include?

Typically bath, dry, brush-out, clip or scissor to style, nails, ears and a hygiene trim. De-matting and hand stripping are usually extra or separate. Each listing's flags show what is offered.

How long does a grooming appointment take?

Usually one to three hours depending on size and coat. One-to-one groomers take longer per dog and book fewer dogs a day, which is why they fill up.

Are there mobile dog groomers in Preston?

Yes, a few. Use the Mobile filter. Mobile groomers come to you in a fitted van; home-based and salon groomers are marked Premises with their area.

Do any Preston groomers do cats?

A few do, including one mobile groomer who works only with cats. Use the Cats too filter, and expect cat grooming to be by appointment and often one-to-one, because most cats need a quieter room than a busy dog salon.
